Recent research from Stanford University’s Digital Economy Lab and ADP Research indicates that generative artificial intelligence is significantly impacting entry-level employment. According to the Canaries Dashboard, which tracks 4.6 million workers, employment for those aged 22 to 25 in highly AI-exposed occupations is currently shrinking at an annual rate of 3.8%.
This trend stands in contrast to the broader labor market, where total employment in AI-exposed roles has remained relatively stable, suggesting that the technology is disproportionately affecting early-career "on-ramps" rather than eliminating established positions. Economist Erik Brynjolfsson, who led the study, suggests that AI is absorbing entry-level tasks such as data retrieval, formatting, and scheduling before it displaces more complex, senior roles.
