Howard Lutnick, the CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald and a key figure in the Trump administration’s economic planning, and former congressional candidate Bo Hines have reportedly influenced the drafting of the "GENIUS Act" to benefit the stablecoin issuer Tether. The legislation, which proposes a strategic national bitcoin reserve, saw several regulatory safeguards and transparency requirements removed during its development.
These changes would effectively reduce the oversight faced by Tether, whose multi-billion dollar reserves are managed by Lutnick’s firm. The removal of these provisions has sparked discussions regarding potential conflicts of interest, as Lutnick serves as both a high-ranking political advisor and a primary financial partner for the world’s largest stablecoin.
