Waymo has issued a voluntary recall for its fleet of nearly 4,000 robotaxis following several incidents where vehicles entered active highway construction zones. The company has restricted its autonomous vehicles from driving on freeways while it develops a software update to improve performance in these environments.
The recall was filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) after the company identified 13 instances in Phoenix and San Francisco where vehicles failed to recognize ramp closure signs or prioritized other hazards over construction barriers. Despite the suspension of highway operations, Waymo continues to provide rides on surface streets in its active service areas.
