The European Union has reached an agreement to postpone the implementation of high-risk artificial intelligence restrictions under its AI Act until December 2027. Originally scheduled to take effect in August, the delay follows pressure from industry leaders and member states who expressed concerns about global competitiveness.
As part of the deal, industrial AI applications will be largely exempt from the new rules to avoid double regulation, though other sectors such as medical devices will remain subject to the law. The revised agreement also introduces specific prohibitions, including a ban on AI systems that generate sexualized deepfakes of identifiable individuals or child pornography.
