The Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (AISI) reports that open-weight AI models are rapidly catching up to the cybersecurity capabilities of proprietary, closed-weight frontier models. Recent evaluations indicate that the gap has narrowed to between four and seven months, a significant reduction from the six-to-ten-month lag observed throughout 2025.
The GLM-5.2 model was identified as the most capable open-weight system tested, performing comparably to high-end closed models released only a few months prior, even as frontier systems like GPT-5.5 continue to demonstrate large jumps in autonomous capability. This narrowing window poses a challenge for global security, as open-weight models lack the persistent safeguards and monitoring capabilities inherent to controlled, API-based systems.
