Beijing-based AI lab Z.ai, formerly known as Zhipu AI, has officially launched ZCode, a free "agentic" integrated development environment (IDE) designed to compete with established tools like Cursor, Claude Code, and GitHub Copilot. The application is built specifically to leverage the company’s flagship GLM-5.2 large language model, which was trained entirely on Huawei silicon to avoid reliance on American chips.
ZCode distinguishes itself through an agent-first design that handles multi-step, long-horizon development tasks and includes unique features for the Chinese market, such as the ability to control coding agents via messaging platforms like WeChat and Feishu. The launch follows recent geopolitical volatility in the AI sector, specifically the brief U.S. export controls on Anthropic’s most advanced models.
