Meta Platforms has announced it will provide rival messaging services with free technical access to WhatsApp and Messenger to comply with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act. This move is designed to foster interoperability between different communication platforms, allowing users on third-party apps to send messages, images, and voice notes directly to users on Meta’s services.
By opening its ecosystem, Meta aims to satisfy regulatory requirements that target "gatekeeper" companies to ensure a more competitive digital market. To maintain security standards, third-party developers wishing to connect with Meta’s infrastructure must adhere to specific technical requirements, including the use of the Signal Protocol for end-to-end encryption.
