Republican governors from Montana, Wyoming, and Missouri have joined several major utility companies in endorsing the White House’s Ratepayer Protection Pledge. This nonbinding agreement, established by the Trump administration, aims to ensure that data center developers cover the costs of their significant energy and water consumption, as well as necessary grid infrastructure improvements.
The initiative is designed to prevent rising electricity demands from artificial intelligence and hyperscale facilities from being passed on to residential consumers in the form of higher utility bills. While the pledge was initially signed by major technology firms such as Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, its expansion to include state leaders and utilities like Southern Co. and Duke Energy underscores the growing political urgency of managing energy costs.
