YouTube and Snap Inc. have reached agreements to settle a lawsuit brought by a rural Kentucky school district, which alleged that social media addiction has severely disrupted student learning. The legal action claims that the design of these platforms contributed to a mental health crisis, forcing public schools to expend significant financial resources to manage the fallout.
These settlements mark a major development in the first such case to head toward trial. The remaining defendants in the case, which include Meta Platforms Inc. and TikTok, are still scheduled to go to trial on June 12 in federal court in Oakland, California.
