Google has officially decommissioned the Tenor API, a move that impacts numerous third-party applications relying on the service for GIF search and integration. While Google acquired the GIF repository in 2018, the company stated that sunsetting the API is part of a broader effort to prioritize resources for its core products.
New developer sign-ups were halted earlier this year, but as of June 30, 2026, all remaining external integrations have been fully shut down. The shutdown has immediate consequences for popular platforms such as Twitter/X, Discord, WhatsApp, and Bluesky, which previously utilized Tenor to power their GIF pickers.
