While the rollout of this change will begin in early September, the company noted that the process may take several weeks to reach all global users.
This transition marks a significant shift in Google’s AI infrastructure as it forces a permanent move from the older voice-response technology to more advanced generative AI.
Once the change is implemented, users will no longer be able to access or revert to the original Google Assistant on Android phones, tablets, or Wear OS smartwatches.
The discontinuation also extends to headphones and vehicles using Android Auto projected from a mobile device, though vehicles with Google built-in software will continue to support the legacy assistant for now.
While the current deadline focuses on mobile and wearable hardware, Google is also planning to integrate Gemini into its broader smart home ecosystem, including Google TV and Nest speakers.
The company previously delayed this shutdown from late 2025 to ensure a smoother transition for its user base.
For now, users can still find an option to switch back to the legacy assistant within the Gemini app settings, but this functionality will be permanently removed during the September rollout.
