Ascend is Huawei's AI chip line.
SemiAnalysis describes the move as part of a trade: Huawei has hardware and a native software stack but no frontier model lab to prove it, while DeepSeek has models and engineering skill but cannot buy the computing power it needs.
Of the six repositories, only TileLang is usable so far, and Huawei's CANN 9.2.0 software has not yet been released.
SemiAnalysis found the Ascend 950PR, a chip aimed at prefill (processing a prompt before generating a reply) and recommendation workloads, sits between Nvidia's A100 and AMD's MI300X in absolute performance.
Even so, Huawei's best matrix-multiplication kernels reached 99.7% of the ceiling across 1,055 test shapes, and the chip's memory bandwidth utilization neared Nvidia's H100 at large transfer sizes.
SemiAnalysis expects DeepSeek to rely mainly on Huawei's stack by 2027 or 2028, citing pressure to build a fully domestic Chinese ecosystem.
An unverified May investor-meeting transcript quotes DeepSeek's Liang Wenfeng saying the software gap would close but that four Huawei cards were needed to match one Nvidia card, and that Huawei was about two years behind in bringing hardware to market.
The influence runs both ways. Ascend's design led DeepSeek to store quantized values and scaling factors together in FlashMLA's cache, which cuts transfer requests, and to handle attention accumulation differently. TileLang now has a native Ascend backend, and its scheduler cut single-operation time by up to 40% on small sizes. DeepEP-Ascend, now distributed under DeepSeek's own organization after a 2025 proposal was declined, notes memory contention that Huawei plans to ease through firmware. Huawei also gets DeepSeek's model weights, enabling day-zero optimized releases of DeepSeek V4 and V4.1. The benefits may be uneven, however: most optimizations target Huawei's supernodes, and with vLLM-Ascend 0.26.0rc1, users on x86 host machines face missing DeepGEMM support, startup-blocking ARM dependencies, skipped CPU binding and no x86 continuous-integration testing.
