iFixit Teardown of iPhone Duo Points to Causes of Broken Screens and Hinges

Audio brief

What happened

iFixit has taken apart Apple's iPhone Duo and given the foldable phone a 5/10 repairability score, the highest the repair site has awarded a foldable so far.

Why it matters

The findings matter because some owners have reported damaged screens and cracking hinges. iFixit has theories rather than a confirmed cause.

In detail

The teardown also turned up details about how Apple may be hiding the crease in the folding screen.

The internal display has a matte nano-texture cover, which improves readability in bright sunlight and also helps mask the crease by scattering reflections.

Under a microscope, iFixit found oval subpixels arranged at various angles, which the site believes are meant to reduce visual artifacts and further disguise the fold.

It describes the hinge as extremely complex and suspects part of it sometimes fails to descend properly.

An accordion-style cable runs over that same spot, close to the edge of the battery, and iFixit says this could concentrate pressure, potentially explaining the audible crack some users have described and the broken screens.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

On repairs, the nano-texture outer layer is relatively easy to replace without removing the OLED panel underneath. Fixing the display itself is still expensive and difficult, as with other foldables. In dust testing, grit got into the USB-C port, speaker grills, and hinge, making the hinge feel crunchy. But noticeably less of the glow dust entered the phone than with Samsung's Z Fold8 or Google's Pixel 11 Pro Fold.
