The White House has imposed export controls on Anthropic’s Mythos and Fable 5 AI models following reports that a China-linked group may have accessed the technology. The federal directive required the company to restrict access to the models exclusively to U.S. citizens, a mandate that would have prohibited Anthropic’s own foreign-national employees from using them.
Consequently, Anthropic chose to withdraw the models from the market entirely rather than comply with the specific access limitations. The administration’s decision was largely driven by national security concerns regarding the models' advanced capabilities, particularly their proficiency in identifying software vulnerabilities.
