Massachusetts has officially certified the App Drivers Union (ADU), making it the first state-sanctioned rideshare union in the United States. This certification follows a years-long organizing effort and grants the union the authority to represent approximately 70,000 Uber and Lyft drivers across the state.
The move was finalized after the Massachusetts Department of Labor Relations confirmed that the union received the necessary support from active drivers to serve as their exclusive bargaining representative. Although these drivers continue to operate as independent contractors, the union is now legally empowered to enter into collective bargaining with rideshare platforms.
