A Stockholm court has ordered Google to pay nearly $2 billion in damages to PriceRunner, a price comparison service owned by the Swedish fintech company Klarna. The ruling concludes a multi-year legal battle centered on allegations that Google engaged in anti-competitive behavior by manipulating search results to favor its own shopping services over those of its rivals.
The lawsuit was originally filed in 2022 following a landmark decision by the European Commission, which found that Google had violated antitrust laws within the European Economic Area. PriceRunner argued that Google’s practices resulted in significant lost profits and stifled competition in the price comparison market.
