Microsoft is transitioning its Copilot Cowork enterprise AI tool to a usage-based pricing model to better manage the high computational costs associated with agentic AI. Because these tools frequently call upon models to complete complex, multi-step tasks, Microsoft has determined that unlimited-use subscriptions are no longer sustainable for high-volume users.
The shift is designed to align customer costs more closely with the actual compute resources consumed during these operations. To offer more affordable options, Microsoft is exploring the integration of a fine-tuned version of DeepSeek V4 or other open-source models as lower-cost alternatives to the OpenAI and Anthropic models currently powering the service.
