Microsoft is reportedly partnering with its primary cloud competitor, Amazon Web Services (AWS), to address infrastructure and capacity challenges on GitHub. The decision follows a series of reliability issues and outages on the coding platform, which have been exacerbated by a massive surge in AI-driven development.
Although Microsoft originally intended to migrate GitHub entirely to its own Azure cloud service by 2027, the unprecedented growth in code commits—projected to jump from 1 billion in 2025 to 14 billion in 2026—has outpaced current internal resources. To stabilize the platform and ensure service continuity, Microsoft is adopting a multi-cloud strategy that leverages AWS’s global infrastructure.
