French cybercrime authorities have escalated their investigation into Elon Musk and his social media platform X to a criminal probe. This move follows an inquiry that began in early 2025, which initially focused on allegations of algorithmic manipulation designed to interfere with French politics.
The investigation has since broadened to include the spread of AI-generated content through the Grok chatbot, specifically looking into the dissemination of nonconsensual sexual deepfakes and Holocaust denial. The escalation to a criminal investigation comes after both Musk and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino reportedly declined to appear for questioning in April.
