SoftBank Corp. has announced plans to launch a large-scale battery cell manufacturing operation at its plant in Sakai, Osaka, to meet the rising energy demands of AI data centers. Partnering with South Korean firms Cosmos Lab and DeltaX Co., the company aims to begin mass production during the fiscal year starting in April 2027.
The initiative is designed to build the necessary infrastructure to support the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence sector. The facility is expected to produce energy storage systems with an annual output of one gigawatt-hour, which would establish it as one of the largest battery production sites in Japan.
