OpenAI stated it is providing the maximum notice allowed by their agreement to give developers as much time as possible to adjust before access is fully revoked.
The move stems from OpenAI’s concerns regarding SpaceX's compliance with safety and usage terms.
OpenAI cited past instances where companies owned by Elon Musk allegedly violated agreements, including a specific admission that xAI—which is now part of SpaceX—used OpenAI data to train its own competing models through a process called distillation, or using one model's output to teach another.
OpenAI claims these prior contract breaches make it impossible to maintain confidence that its technology will be used appropriately under SpaceX's leadership.
This cancellation was triggered by a "change of control" clause in Cursor's custom contract, which allowed OpenAI a limited window to end the partnership following the acquisition.
While developers can still use current OpenAI models in Cursor for the next two years, the editor will not receive access to OpenAI's upcoming model, Astra.
OpenAI acknowledged the disruption this will cause for the developer community and stated it intends to support users through the transition away from the integrated service.
