Pope Leo XIV has issued a comprehensive 42,300-word papal encyclical addressing the ethical implications and societal risks of artificial intelligence. In the document, which was presented alongside Anthropic co-founder Christopher Olah, the Pope called for strict government regulation of private tech companies to safeguard human dignity.
While acknowledging that technology is not inherently antagonistic, the letter warns against prioritizing corporate profits over the preservation of human employment and social roles. A major focus of the encyclical is the protection of vulnerable populations, particularly children, from AI-generated threats such as hypersexualized content and digital misinformation.
