Meta has dropped its opposition to the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) following a legislative compromise that bundles the safety measure with federal artificial intelligence regulations and new age-verification requirements. The agreement includes language that would preempt various state-level AI laws, addressing tech industry concerns regarding a patchwork of conflicting regional regulations.
The revised legislative package also incorporates the App Store Accountability Act, which mandates that platforms like Apple and Google verify the ages of their users. While Meta has lobbied in favor of this requirement, it previously opposed KOSA due to free speech concerns.
