Mustafa Suleyman, the CEO of Microsoft AI, recently outlined the company's strategy to establish independence from OpenAI by developing its own frontier AI models and custom accelerator chips. Speaking ahead of the Microsoft Build conference, Suleyman noted that the company has reached performance parity with industry leaders in just six months.
This rapid development is part of a broader effort to capture a global market for generalist reasoning and coding models, which Suleyman estimates is currently less than 1% penetrated. A central component of this strategy is Microsoft’s decision to skip "model distillation," a common industry shortcut where smaller models are trained using the outputs of more sophisticated ones.
