UK to Invest £100M in AI Biosecurity Lab Backed by OpenAI, Anthropic, Google

The UK government says it will set up a national AI Biosecurity Lab, committing £100m in Wednesday's Budget to what it calls a "world first" institute meant to strengthen defences against emerging biological threats.

OpenAI and Anthropic will support the project by providing £200m worth of AI model credits, which can be spent on using their models.

Full details of the lab's role and remit have not yet been set out.

The chancellor framed the package as a "distinctively British approach" to AI that does not leave workers behind and defends the national interest.

The government also pointed to the need to build more critical technology at home, including advanced chips and British AI companies, as part of that security effort.

The Budget also adds £120m for the AI Security Institute, created in 2023 under the previous Conservative government to evaluate risks from the most powerful AI models, at a time of growing calls for technical standards and guardrails. A further £60m will go to a "National Cyber Shield" that would use agentic AI, meaning systems that can act with some autonomy, to boost cyber-defences. Another £70m will fund a National Exposure and Real-Time Vulnerability Centre to use AI tools to detect weaknesses across critical infrastructure and the wider economy. The announcements follow the government taking some sites offline as a precaution after critical flaws, dubbed php2shell, were found in the PHP programming language. No successful exploits have been reported, but experts say the case shows how AI can quickly uncover long-dormant bugs that could then be exploited.
