While the retailer once attempted to lead an industry-wide alternative to Apple Pay, the widespread adoption of mobile wallets has made them a standard expectation for shoppers.
By integrating these services, Walmart is moving to resolve a point of friction for customers who have long requested more convenient checkout options common at most other major U.S.
retailers.
The company stated that this expansion is part of a broader effort to provide customers and members with more choice in how they manage their money at checkout.
Following the initial integration at store registers this year, Walmart intends to extend Tap to Pay support to all its fuel stations by the middle of 2027.
These updates will exist alongside current payment methods, including cash, traditional credit cards, and the retailer’s existing in-house digital payment tools.
