YouTube and its parent company, Google, have reached a confidential settlement in a major lawsuit centered on the mental health impacts of social media on minors. The settlement involves a 15-year-old plaintiff who alleged that the platform’s design features, such as autoplay and infinite scroll, contribute to psychological harm including depression and anxiety.
This case is part of a series of "bellwether" trials in California intended to test legal arguments for nearly 2,500 similar lawsuits filed against major tech corporations. While Google has resolved its portion of the case, the trial is set to proceed against Meta, TikTok, and Snap in late July.
