A BBC investigation has revealed that Instagram has been running paid advertisements in India promoting child sexual abuse material. These ads, which were approved by Meta's automated moderation systems, used explicit keywords and linked users to Telegram channels where illegal content was sold for nominal fees.
Despite initial reports from investigators being dismissed by the platform as not violating community standards, Meta later disabled several accounts and removed the offending advertisements following direct inquiries from the press. The Indian government has summoned Meta representatives to address the findings, as the distribution of such material constitutes a criminal offense under local law.
